Mumbai native Kareena Kapoor comes from a Pathan family, the youngest daughter of a family of actors. Her parents are the actors Randhi Kapoor and Babita, and her grandfather was the famous Raj Kapoor, descendent of the pioneering silent movie star Prithviraj Kapoor. Kareena comes from divided home, however, as her mother took left her father after he tried to prevent Kareena and her sisters from choosing what they wanted to do. Kareena studied law at Churchgate before deciding to pursue acting full time, joining Kishore Namit Kapoor's Institute of Acting. Her first major film was in the film Refugee, a historical drama during the Indian and Pakistsan war in 1971. Kapoor won high praise for her portrayal of a Bangladeshi girl fleeing her country, for which she won Filmfare's Award for Best Female Debut. She followed her success in Refugee with the romantic drama Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, in which she played the love interest of a distressed young man. Mujhe became one of the top movies of 2001. She also featured in the internationally successful Asoka, a biopic about the Mauryan emperor that received great reviews throughout the world and that screened at festivals in Venice and Toronto. For her portrayal of Asoka's wife, she was nominated for Best Actress at the annual Filmfare Awards. In that same year, Kareena was in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the best selling movies of the year. In the mid 2000's, Kareena Kapoor's career suffered after a string of unsuccessful movies, but she has made a comeback beginning with her edgy performance in Chameli, where she portrayed a prostitute. In recent years, she has starred in the highly successful films Golmaal Returns, Tashan, and most notably, Jab We Met. For her performance in Jab We Met, she won many awards, including Filmfare's Best Actress and a second Star Screen Best Actress Award (the first being for her performance in an adapted version of Shakespeare's Othello). Kareena Kapoor is currently at the height of her career, with years of great movies ahead of her. She is regarded throughout the country as a one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of her generation, and there should be much more of her soon! |
